After years of bullying, an openly gay Brazilian student, Talles de Oliveira Faira, made a strong statement by receiving his graduation certificate from the Aeronautic Technology Institute of the Air Force in high heels and a red dress.
Talles, 24, had chosen to receive his Engineering certificate from the Brazilian prestigious Aeronautic Technology Institute of the Air Force in such outfit as a protest for all the years of suffering he went through in the academy.
“Since I was 12 years old I listened to wonderful things about the Institute,” he said. “I heard that it was the best university in the country and that it could open you several opportunities in the future. The institute was my dream. I did not know that it was going to be the worst deception of my life.”
Talles’ disappointment came from the non-stop shaming and discrimination from students and staff because of his sexuality: “Since childhood they teach us that being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transsexual is a shame and then we take a lot of time to heal those injuries. They insulted me, they laughed at me and tried to make me invisible.”
Telles proudly opened and removed his robe to show his outfit when he was called to receive the diploma.
